MIDDLE ENGLISH
1100-1500

In 1066, when William the Conqueror invaded and conquered England, the Normans brought their French language and this became the language of the Royal Court and the ruling/business classes. For some time, the lower classes spoke English while the upper classes spoke French. During the 14th century, English was dominant in Britain again but this time it had French words integrated into it. It was called Middle English. Geoffrey Chaucer used Middle English for poetry. This would still be difficult for native English speakers to understand today.
